We have an opportunity in Massachusetts to change our marijuana laws. Currently under consideration is a bill to tax and regulate the cannabis industry, our state's largest crop after cranberries. These bills, H.2929, S. 1801 define a classification system based on THC content of A, B and C with an excise tax ranging from $150 per ounce for grade C to $250 for grade A. Home grown for personal use would not be taxed nor would hemp as it's THC content is under 1%. This law would quit wasting money on the legal system, the penal system, law enforcement and give us an opportunity for a green economically sound future.
Currently a bill to legalize the medical use of marijuana, H. 2160 and S. 1739 is being considered. The House bill, An Act to regulate the medical use of marijuana by patients approved by physicians and certified by the department of public health. would allow possession of up to 4 ounces and/or 12 plants. The Senate bill, An Act relative to the arrest and
prosecution for the possession of marihuana for medical purposes allows 4 ounces and 10 plants.
These bills are currently being considered so the time to speak out and be heard is now.
